A Simple Guide to Google Ads

Google ads

What is Google Ads?

Google Ads is a paid online advertising platform. It helps businesses reach consumers worldwide and target these users based on what they’re searching for, demographics, the device their using and much more.
Google Ads work for all types of businesses, regardless of size or industry. They’re a great way to reach a targeted group of potential customers. You also have great control over your budget and how much you would like to be spending each month.

Types of Ads

Google Ads has five different campaign types to choose from, let’s take a look at each one.

Search Ads

These are text ads that show up on the Google search results page. A great benefit of these ads is that they are being shown to users who are searching for them.
For example, in the screenshot below a user searches for ‘smart watches’ and the results in the red rectangle are search ads. When users see these ads they are typically high intent leads because they are actively searching for these results or similar ones.

Display Ads

The Google Display Network reaches 90% of global Internet users while they’re browsing websites, reading Gmail, watching YouTube videos, or using apps.

Video Ads

Video Ads are shown before, during and after YouTube videos.
Looking at the example below, we can see a screenshot of a Wix ad that appears before a YouTube video. You’ll also notice that there’s a second Display ad for Wix in the top right corner too.

Shopping Ads

Shopping Ads are displayed on the Google search engine results page. They include an image of the product, a brief description and other details like price or stock.
In the screenshot below you can see examples of shopping ads when a user searches for ‘white shoes’. You’ll also notice directly below the shopping ads there are three search ads, followed by organic search results.

App Ads

The final type of ads are Google App ads, which encourage users to install your app or take a certain action within your app. These ads are displayed on Google Play, Google Search Network, YouTube, and the Google Display Network

Benefits of Google Ads

Reach

Google gives you the power to tap into a huge potential audience. The search engine processes at least 2+ trillion searches per year, totally to over 5 billion searches per day. This means you can target user’s worldwide while they’re browsing the Internet.

Targeting

Google allows you to target the right people at the right time. You can target people based on what they’re searching for, their gender, location, age, device and more. You can also choose when you would like your ads to be shown.
This means a small bakery can choose to target their ads at users aged between 24-55 and are living or working near the bakery. They can then decide to only have their ads display before and during lunch time.

Competitive

Google search and shopping ads allow you to outrank your competitors on the search engine results page. This is particularly beneficial to businesses as 75% of users don’t click past the first results page.
